The 49th Scottish Transport Extravaganza - Glamis Castle - June 12th and 13th
In the opening paragraph of his welcome message in the programme, Allan Burt, Chairman of the Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club, said "The Scottish Transport Extravaganza seems to come around with undue haste each year."
Indeed it does! It seems like it was only a couple of months ago that we were all saying what a fantastic show they had put on in 2024 and how much we were looking forward to 2025 but here we all were once again meeting in the Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool car park at 07:30 on Sunday 13th June for the run down to Glamis. A few members had travelled down to the show on Saturday 12th, but the vast majority went on the Sunday.
A gloriously cloudless sky and very hot temperatures were the order of the day and we had a very leisurely run down the A90 to get to Glamis. As usual, we were privileged to be joining Kay and Mike Dennis (Team Dennis) on the fantastic Tayside MG stand which this year featured no fewer than 105 cars - hence the early start to get everyone parked!
Mike and Kay put in an enormous amount of work to make their stand the success that it is. This includes all the administration to coordinate all the MGOC clubs which starts around January, and then in the days leading up to event all the work to mow the grass (yes, really!), install the stand boundary fence and entrance gates, tents, gazebos and flags. As always, the stand looked superb and they managed to squeeze all 105 cars in with little or no room to spare - excellent planning!! Their efforts were rewarded once again by being voted the best car club stand of the event - an award which is richly deserved. See below the picture of them proudly showing off their award - photo bombed by Royston Goodman!
A barely believable record 2030+ vehicles had entered the show and provided a fantastic spectacle for the thousands of spectators who attended over the weekend. 13 Club members entered and we were parked by vehicle type rather than as a club, so we were spread throughout the stand. It was great to catch up with old friends and make new ones.
As well as all the exhibits, a large number of traders and catering outlets were present offering a wide range of goods- I even managed to find a pair of period style door mirrors for my MGB so all in all a very successful day.
All too soon the show was over for another year but we're all looking forward to next year which will be the 50th! Wonder if they're planning anything special to celebrate? Keep an eye out for the date of next years show and get your names down early - if you've never been I thoroughly recommend it - definitely one of the highlights of the year and there is even a camping area and plenty of local hotels if you want to make a weekend of it.
Special thanks to Ian Reader (Kingdom MGOC) and club members Anita and Roger for some of the pictures below. I only managed to take a few as I was too busy chatting all day!
