Anderson Drive Fire Station Visit - Thursday June 18th
With special thanks to club member Gordon Brockie for arranging the visit and also to David Watson and the members of White Watch, club members were treated to a behind the scenes visit to the active Fire Station on Anderson Drive. Unfortunately the web master was unable to attend due to a prior engagement, so thanks to Social Secretary Anita for the following report:
11 MG club members attended this meeting.
We were hosted by White Watch Manager David Watson. He showed us around the station, the kitchen dining area, the relax lounge area, the command offices, the computer rooms for study and the changing areas and areas for equipment storage etc . Then into the vehicle area. Both fire engines 1 and 2 were outside leaving the white incident vehicle in the garage.
The fire crew were outside preparing to give us a demonstration of rescuing persons trapped in a car when the fire alarms went off and we witnessed them responding and taking off to a fire. 1 member of the fire crew remained with us and gave us more informative information about their roles.
Luckily the shout was only burned toast and they returned within half an hour, but because it was in multi storey flats 4 fire pumps had to attend. 2 from central and 2 from Anderson drive only leaving another 2 pumps from the Altens Station for the rest of Aberdeen.
When they returned, we watched their skills in stabilising the vehicle then using Battery operated spreaders, cutters and expanders to dismantle the car. We had the opportunity to try to lift the equipment and they are so heavy.
The engines can pump 2000l of water out in 12 minutes and the spreaders and cutters have a force of 32-34 tonnes.
We then viewed the engines and the equipment in them.
The White Watch Crew are all clearly passionate about their jobs and spoke with enthusiasm about their roles and their colleagues.
We are in safe hands!
We thanked them for the tour and their time.
